1972 Mattel Hot Wheels "Redlines"

The decline of Hot Wheels sales in 1972 led to only 7 new models added to the Hot Wheels Redlines (known as Ruote Brucia Pista in Italy). Paralleling this trend, only one new Hot Wheels Gran Toros was introduced and was actually "in the works" in 1971. 1972 saw the discontinuation of Series Sputafuoco in Italy. Series Sputafuoco was the name for the Hot Wheels Gran Toros in Italy. With a disappearing market for the Hot Wheels Gran Toros (Sputafuoco) in North America, Mattel S.p.A. (Mebetoys) applied the Gran Toros name to some of their Mebetoys Series models. In fact, the 1/43 scale Mebetoys series was divided into new catagories; Series Mebetoys, Series Gran Super, Series Europa, and Series Gran Toros, based on the style of the models.
