Gran Toros / Sputafuoco Chevrolet Astro IIThe Gran Toros Astro II, Mattel model # 6602, was based on a Chevrolet Astro II (XP-880) Corvette concept car that was first shown at the 1968 New York Auto Show. The actual car that was modeled is currently in the AACA Museum, Hershey, PA and is blue in color. It is sometimes confused with the more radically styled Astro I that was first shown in 1967. The Astro II used a mid-mounted 427 cubic inch (6,997cc) V8 engine. This model was one of the original Gran Toros and only released as a Gran Toros model # 6602. The earliest castings for the European market had the model number SB-102 (this early numbering system was based on the series being named SuperBoldi for the Italian market before the final name of Sputafuoco for the series). One of the original Gran Toros, it was part of the Sputafuoco and Heisse Räder Supergorss series and first appeared on the bottom of the North American box and the 1970 Mattel Toyfair catalog, the 1970 Mattel Italian Dealer catalog and the 1970 International catalog. |
